The Taste of Italy

Café #999 2023

Café #999 · 2023 · Gold MUSE 2023

A café in an arts setting offers a different starting point from a restaurant that wants only to show its menu. The context is already asking for a relationship between food and imagination.

For Café #999, the film brings gastronomy together with digital art. The production incorporated AI-powered effects as part of that visual approach and received Gold at the MUSE Creative Awards.

Art as part of the idea

The useful question was how the film could participate in the café’s creative setting, rather than merely mention it.

Digital imagery gives the work another register alongside the photographed food. Its role is to extend the idea of the place: a meeting between something made to be eaten and something made to be looked at.

That relationship needs to remain clear. An effect can be technically interesting and still have no reason to appear in a restaurant film. Here, the connection to art gives the visual experimentation a purpose within the brief.

Technology serving the treatment

The presence of AI-powered effects is part of the production record. It is not the entire proposition of the work.

For me, the useful test for any new technique is whether it helps the film express something more precisely. The audience should be able to enjoy the piece without needing an explanation of the software used to make it.

Food with a different frame of reference

The finished film belongs to a place where food and creative culture meet. Its value is in allowing those two identities to inform one another, rather than choosing between a conventional food advertisement and a disconnected demonstration of effects.

The award recognises the result. The underlying creative choice is the more transferable part: start with what is particular to the brief, then choose the techniques that can make it visible.
