Qatar Airways · 2022
Five football freestyle world champions, a World Cup and a track most people recognise before the first lyric. The useful question was how to make those ingredients belong to one idea.
For Qatar Airways, the film builds towards Queen’s “We Will Rock You” through a sequence of sounds and football performances. The rhythm gives the action a destination. Each contribution helps assemble something the audience already knows, so recognition becomes part of the payoff.
A performance that builds
The attraction of freestyle football is control: an apparently casual action that takes considerable skill. A film can admire that skill from a distance, or give it a job inside the structure. Here, the individual performances participate in the build rather than sitting beside one another as a highlights reel.
That makes sound part of the concept. The relationship between an action and its place in the rhythm matters as much as the action itself. The film needs the audience to follow a progression, not simply register that the talent is impressive.
Made for a shared moment
The five performers also had audiences of their own. The campaign therefore had a social context beyond the airline’s account: football skill, a familiar track and the atmosphere of the 2022 World Cup gave viewers several ways into the piece.
The directing lesson I take from this is about structure. When there are several strong personalities in a short film, a clear organising idea gives each of them room without making the work feel like five separate introductions.
The finished piece joins a musical build with a recognisable football occasion. The brand belongs to that shared experience rather than interrupting it to explain the sponsorship.
