When a clearer brief, campaign direction or creative review is more useful than commissioning another video. Define the decision first.
Sometimes the request is for a video because a video is the most familiar thing to commission. The underlying problem may be a message that has not settled, an audience that is too broadly defined or a campaign with no clear next step.
Production can make an idea tangible. It cannot decide what the business meant to say without someone doing that work first.
Notice when the output is ahead of the question
A brief that specifies duration, format and production date but cannot explain the intended response is ready for a conversation before it is ready for a camera.
The same is true when several stakeholders describe different objectives. A film asked to recruit staff, sell a service and celebrate a company milestone may be carrying three assignments that need to be separated.
Creative consultancy gives those questions a defined place to be resolved. The output might be a clearer brief, a campaign concept, an editorial approach or a set of priorities for the work already planned.
Make the scope concrete
Consultancy should not mean an indefinite series of conversations. Agree on the decision to be made and what the work will leave behind.
For example: assess the existing campaign, identify where its message loses clarity, propose a stronger direction and produce a brief that a team can execute. Each step should connect to the problem that brought everyone into the room.
The scope might also be narrower: a treatment review, an edit review or help deciding which parts of a campaign deserve production resources. A small, well-defined intervention can be more useful than a large document nobody knows how to use.
Directing experience changes the advice
A creative recommendation becomes more valuable when it understands what implementation asks of people. Performance, coverage, editing, sound and production constraints are part of how an idea reaches an audience.
That is the connection between my directing work and consultancy. I am interested in decisions that remain useful when the presentation is closed and someone has to make the work.
It also means the answer does not always need to be a film. A static piece, a clearer sequence of messages or a better use of existing material may serve the objective. The deliverable should earn its place.
Start with what is stuck
You do not need a polished consultancy brief. Explain what you are trying to achieve, what you have tried, which decisions are unresolved and who will use the result.
Get in touch if you need help clarifying the creative direction of a campaign. We can decide what the work needs before deciding what it should look like.
