Our Birthday. Your Party.

Mondrian Doha 2023

Mondrian Doha · 2023

An anniversary film can easily become an internal celebration presented to people who were not in the meeting. The more useful invitation is to give those people a reason to join in.

This film marked Mondrian’s fourth anniversary. The approach followed the hotel’s eccentric character, moving away from a conventional corporate tone towards a more playful, unconventional expression of hospitality.

The occasion is not the whole idea

An anniversary provides a date and a reason to commission a film. It does not automatically provide a personality. That has to come from the place itself.

Here, the hotel’s distinctive identity offered a stronger starting point than a formal summary of its history. The work could feel like an expression of the venue rather than a report on its achievements.

Permission to be particular

Hospitality advertising often tries to reassure everyone at once. The risk is a film whose elegance could belong to almost any property.

A recognisable character gives the directing approach permission to make choices. It can affect the tone, the performances, the rhythm and the relationship between moments. Those choices become more convincing when they all come from the same reading of the brand.

An invitation rather than an account

The title turns a milestone into something addressed to the guest. That is the useful shift: the hotel has a birthday, but the audience is offered a party.

For me, the project illustrates how a corporate occasion can become an outward-facing idea. The facts of the anniversary remain intact; the film spends its attention on the experience and attitude that might make someone want to be there.

The result belongs to the hotel’s personality, which is a more durable form of recognition than an anniversary number alone.
