Qatar National Library · 2023 · Gold MUSE 2023
A library is easy to photograph as architecture. It is harder, and more interesting, to describe what it makes possible for the people using it.
“Beyond Books” is a brand film for Qatar National Library. Its subject extends beyond the collection to the library’s role in the community: access, inclusion and the range of people who can find a place within it.
A building understood through people
The collection and the setting establish where the film takes place. They are not the whole argument. The more meaningful question is what changes when that space is available to someone.
That distinction shifts the emphasis of an institutional film. Instead of asking the audience to admire an organisation’s scale, the work can give them a reason to understand its purpose. People become evidence of that purpose, rather than extras used to populate a room.
A broader definition of the brief
The title is a useful summary of the approach. A library can hold historical material, provide a place to study and connect people with knowledge. Reducing it to shelves would leave much of its value outside the frame.
For me, the strength of this kind of brief is the opportunity to make an institution feel legible without making it feel small. A film does not have to explain every service to communicate a generous, public role. It needs a consistent perspective on why those services exist.
Recognition
The film won Gold at the MUSE Creative Awards in 2023. The more lasting point is the choice at the centre of it: showing a place through its relationship with the people it welcomes.
That is the work an institutional brand film should be doing. The building can make a striking image; the human purpose gives that image something to say.
